Trichology, Oprah and me

TRICHOLOGY IS the science of hair, scalp disorders and diseases.

Members of the Institute of Trichologists work in all aspects of the hair, beauty, manufacturing, research, teaching and litigation fields. As a qualified trichologist you may be asked to work alongside medical or legal professionals to assist in furthering cases.

I was asked to undertake my first legal case relating to 11kg of raw hair; to view this quantity of hair I had to visit the hair merchants. Nothing could prepare me for the room which was full of raw hair.

As time went on my caseload expanded and I was doing more television and radio interviews. One programme in particular was when I went out on location in Birmingham to record for the BBC on areas of concern in the hairdressing field.

The programme was shown, and out of the blue I received a telephone call from a solicitor namely Brigitte Goff who had had a highlighting procedure carried out at the hairdressers. Unfortunately, following this procedure her hair started to break away. She said that she did not know where to go who to contact as she felt devastated and that her confidence was very low.

Her husband had seen the programme and the rest, as they say, is history.

The resultant publicity led, among other things, to our being flown out to Chicago and appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Whoever said the power of the media doesn’t work must live in a bubble.
