Neurological Care

Guillain-Barré & Associated Inflammatory Neuropathies (GAIN)
Registered charity 1154843 & SCO39900

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system. It causes the nerves in the arms and legs to become inflamed and stop working, usually leading to temporary paralysis.

Each year, an estimated 1,800 people in the UK and Ireland are diagnosed with GBS or CIDP, (a similar but longer-lasting condition). About 80% of those with GBS will make a good recovery, but between 5-10% of people die and the other 10-15% will experience long term issues ranging from limited mobility or dexterity, to life-long dependency on a wheelchair.

GAIN is the only national organisation in the UK and Republic of Ireland dedicated to supporting people affected by these conditions.

What we do:

  • Help people understand and manage GBS, CIDP and the associated variants
  • Promote and facilitate both clinical and non-clinical research
  • Raise awareness of the charity and conditions

This is an expensive commitment and we rely solely on voluntary donations, fundraising events and income from legacies. For every £1 we receive, over 85p is spent on fulfilling our charitable objectives, with less than 15p going towards administration costs.

No matter how small or large, leaving GAIN a gift in your will helps safeguard our services for the future, so help will always be there when it is needed most.

Brain Research Trust

Brain Research Trust is the umbrella charity for research into conditions of the brain and nervous system. We were established in 1971 to promote and support research into the causes, treatment, prevention and cure of neurological diseases.

We fund basic and clinical research at University College London’s world-renowned Institute of Neurology (IoN). Since Brain Research Trust was founded, we have donated over £45 million to UCL Institute of Neurology to fund research into neurological conditions.

There are more than 250 neurological conditions. With your support Brain Research Trust can continue investigating conditions including Alzheimer's Disease, Brain Tumours, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Parkinson's Disease, Epilepsy, Motor Neurone Disease, Migraine, CJD, Brain Trauma and Spinal Cord Regeneration. See our research section for further information.

We do not receive any government funding and we rely on the generosity of our supporters. To enable our life-saving research to continue, please donate or help us in other ways.

The National Brain Appeal

The National Brain Appeal raises funds for The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Institute of Neurology (jointly known as Queen Square).
The National Hospital is one of the world’s leading centres for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with a wide range of neurological and neuromuscular conditions including multiple sclerosis (MS), brain cancer, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, Prion disease, and brain injury.

One in six people in the UK are affected by a neurological condition. That’s more than the number of people living with cancer, coronary heart disease and diabetes combined. In spite of this there has been a continuing lack of national prioritisation to deliver better outcomes for those affected. Our aim is to improve the outcome and quality of life for everyone with a neurological disorder by funding pioneering research, providing access to the latest technology for expert diagnosis and training tomorrow’s leading clinicians. Your help can make this possible.
