Consultant Psychiatrist
Dr Pavan Chahl has worked as a consultant psychiatrist in rehabilitation psychiatry in the independent sector for 15 years where all of his patients were commissioned by the NHS. He has also previously worked part time in the NHS for 15 years in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
In total, Dr Chahl has cared for NHS patients for 25 years. He has been working within the speciality since 2001 and first worked as a consultant in 2009. He also worked in a medical management position as a medical director for six years.
He has a Certificate of Completion of specialist Training (CCT) in general adult psychiatry and a specialist endorsement in liaison and rehabilitation psychiatry.
Dr Chahl has given evidence at crown court, civil court, mental health review tribunals, employment tribunals, regulatory body tribunals, family court, parole board hearings, coroner's court and the Royal Courts of Justice.
Since 2009 he has prepared an average of 75 medico-legal reports a year for civil, family, criminal courts and employment tribunals.
Dr Chahl has a breadth of experience in key psychiatric conditions which include depression, anxiety, PTSD, adjustment disorder, bipolar affective disorders, schizophrenia, addiction to alcohol and illicit substances and personality disorders.
Once instructed, he can turn reports around in four weeks. His claimant-defendant ratio is 60:40.
Assessments can be made remotely or at consulting rooms in Birmingham or Solihull.
PERSONAL INJURY
Psychiatric aspects related to personal injury – the medico-legal report would assess whether the personal injury had led to a psychiatric disorder.
CLINICAL NEGLIGENCE
Psychiatric evaluations relating to medical negligence. Negligence is the breach of a duty of care that leads to damage being caused to that person.
FAMILY LAW
Dr Chahl can provide medico-legal psychiatric and psychological assessments for all matters relating to child, adolescent & family law.
DANGEROUSNESS
Dr Chahl can provide assessments of dangerousness and risk of harm in criminal proceedings.
FITNESS TO PLEAD
Providing psychiatric evaluations of defendants in criminal proceedings to determine fitness to plead.
ASSESSMENT OF CAPACITY
Dr Chahl can write a thorough report to evaluate capacity of the defendant.
Dr Chahl can take instructions on behalf of either claimant or defendant or as a Single Joint Expert.
