Poston 748x1024

Emeritus Professor of Surgery

Professor Graeme Poston was appointed as a full time NHS Consultant General Surgeon in 1991. While he retired from full-time NHS practice in 2018, he continues to work part-time for the NHS and intends to do so for the foreseeable future. He remains happy to take instruction on allegations of breach of duty and clinical negligence or personal injury if they are relevant to his expertise. His specialist interests in General Surgery include hernia surgery; management of acute abdominal pain; complications arising following cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder); misdiagnoses and mismanagement of liver, bile duct, pancreas and bowel cancers; and personal injury claims involving abdominal trauma.

Professor Poston revalidated with the GMC in October 2024 for a further 5 years (GMC Registration Number 2491486), remaining fully licensed as an accredited specialist in General Surgery on the General Medical Register until October 2029, when he intends to further revalidate and remain on the General Surgery Specialist Register until 2034, and he confirms that he follows their good practice guidelines. His Responsible Officer for GMC appraisal and revalidation is the Independent Doctors Federation. His malpractice insurance cover for medico legal work (which will continue until 2034) is with the Medical Defence Union (membership number 224068J) and my cover exceeds £5 million.

Professor Poston fully understands his obligations to the Court under Part 35 of the CPR in England and Wales and is fully conversant with the Dunne Principles in Irish law. Over the last 30 years he has prepared over 3,000 reports to the Courts in all four countries of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Hong Kong, St Helena, the Cayman Islands and the USA, addressing allegations of breach of duty, roughly 60% claimant instructed. Over that time, he has had to attend Court on only seven occasions (5 Claimant instructions and 2 Defendant instructions) and the Court preferred his evidence in five of these seven appearances. No judge has ever made adverse comments in their summations about his evidence in Court.
