Mr Ash Khurana is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon based in Newport. He completed his higher specialist training in Trauma & Orthopaedics on the Welsh Rotation and was awarded FRCS in 2012. He has also completed MSc in Orthopaedic engineering at Cardiff University and uses the deeper understanding of mechanical principles in treating his patients.

Mr Khurana has had a busy medico legal practice since 2013. He has a unique blend of Master’s qualifications in Orthopaedic Engineering and Law, complementing his specialist clinical training as a Spinal Surgeon. This rare combination allows him to apply both legal and biomechanical principles when producing comprehensive, analytical, yet succinct medico-legal reports. 

He produces over 200 reports per year dealing with complex personal injury or medical negligence. Mr Khurana maintains a healthy Claimant to Defendant ratio and is happy to opine on breach of duty, condition and prognosis, causation and liability. Mr Khurana is on the GMC panel for expert witnesses for FTP proceedings.

Mr Khurana’s special interests include:

  • Spinal trauma, whiplash injury and vertebral fractures/wedge fractures
  • Cauda Equina Syndrome
  • Metastatic spinal tumors
  • Disc prolapse and Complex degenerative spinal surgery (including neck and back)
  • Occupational injuries causing neck or back pain, repetitive strain injury (RSI)
  • Clinical Negligence in Cauda Equina Syndrome – Thesis accepted as a part of LLM (Legal Aspects of Medical Practice) at Law School, Cardiff University. The study reviewed all the cases regarding the Cauda Equina Syndrome tried in the British courts and the NHSLA data over 10 years.

After rotating through various Orthopaedic subspecialties on the all-Wales training rotation, Mr Khurana undertook the prestigious Advanced Spinal Fellowship at Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham. There, he gained extensive experience in all aspects of spinal management, especially in spinal deformity, metastatic spinal pathology, microscopic and minimally invasive surgery. Mr Khurana was also awarded a travelling Fellowship to the world- renowned Spinal Unit at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong.

Mr Khurana now undertakes high volume spinal and trauma surgeries on an emergency and elective basis both on the NHS and in the private sector. Mr Khurana has completed an MSc in Orthopedic Engineering at Cardiff University and uses a deeper understanding of mechanical principles when treating his patients.
