Marine Surveyor & Consultant
Mr John Clabburn is a qualified Naval Architect and Chartered Engineer, working as a Marine and Yacht Surveyor and Marine Consultant across both the leisure and commercial marine sectors. He specialises in high-unit-value vessels of all types, up to approximately 40 metres in length, with experience covering vessels constructed from wood, GRP and steel.
Mr Clabburn has worked within the marine industry for in excess of fifty years and has held senior management positions in GRP production management for more than twenty-five years.
He has extensive international sales and marketing experience spanning ten years, covering private, commercial, high-speed and paramilitary craft of all types up to approximately 40 metres. During this period, he held particular responsibility for the Pacific Asia region.
Mr Clabburn was a Senior Marine Manager with MAN B&W Ltd, where he was responsible for the international sales of high-speed marine diesel engines, power-trains and propulsion systems.
His professional training commenced with a five-year apprenticeship as a wood yacht and boat builder, followed by ten years of training as a Naval Architect and Ship's Manager with Vosper Thornycroft Ltd, Shipyard, Portsmouth.
Mr Clabburn is a qualified Marine Surveyor, Marine Expert Witness and Marine Consultant. He is compliant with the requirements applicable to Expert Witnesses under the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) Part 35 and Criminal Procedure Rules (CrPR) Part 33. His experience includes acting as a Party Appointed Expert (PAE), Single Joint Expert (SJE), and undertaking Expert Determination. He has prepared in excess of 100 Expert Reports throughout the UK and EU.
Recent Expert Witness instructions include Nordhavn 55 (Qualifying Ship for VAT) v HMRC. Mr Clabburn has also accepted instructions in Ireland, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Croatia and Dubai.
He and his team have undertaken in excess of some 3,000 marine surveys covering a wide range of vessel types and requirements, including, but not limited to, pre-purchase surveys, marine accident investigations and reports, insurance loss-adjusting assignments and vessel valuations for insurance and estate purposes
In addition to his professional qualifications and experience, Mr Clabburn is an Associate of The Academy of Experts, acting as a Marine Surveyor and Consultant. He is also registered on the Register of Qualified Mediators & Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), QDR No. 320.
His international mediation instructions have included matters involving Trawler Fleet Operators v the Irish State – Ministry of Finance.
