After a revelation that the Forensic Science Service, based in Birmingham, was losing almost £2million per month and could run out of money by January, the decision has been made to begin closing its services over time.
The service was created in 2005 and has provided valuable evidence that has provided conclusions to a number of high-profile cases.
Due to spending cuts, the UK Police has had less money to spend on forensic services and as such were performing more in-house work. However, the FSS has also been under threat more recently from competition of privately owned companies.
The closure of the FSS has been deemed a mockery of the justice system by some and deputy general secretary Mike Clancy has commented saying, “Cost will now determine justice in the UK. The government is putting its faith in an untested market to deliver forensic science at a time when it has never been more important to the detection of crime."
The FFS will be closed all services by 2012.
“Speculate before you accumulate. I am a long term regular writer and advertiser in 'Your Expert Witness - the Solicitor’s Choice'. This investment pays me substantive dividends; I get more Expert Witness work with every issue. Not only solicitors and barristers but also judges seem to read it. It is a win-win situation. Success breeds success; I must continue to write and advertise.”
